Rietvlei Boerdery
Rietvlei Boerdery's operations are situated primarily in the Eastern Highveld between Delmas and Bapsfontein, near Endicott and in Devon.

Rietvlei Boerdery consists of two piggeries, a feed mill, a grass production section and cash crop cultivation.

Rietvlei Piggery is a 250 sow farrow to finish operation producing 5000 to 5500 slaughter prigs per annum.

The bulk of the raw materials (maize and soya) for the feed are home grown and most of the feed used are mixed on farm in our own feed mill. Highly specialized diets such as baby pig feed are sourced.

Indoor pig systems allow the pigs 'condition to be monitored ensuring minimum fatalities and increased productivity. Buildings are ventilated and the temperature regulated. Most domestic pig breeds are susceptible to sunburn, heat, stress and all pigs lack sweat glands and thus cannot cool themselves. Pigs have a limited tolerance to high temperatures and heat stress can lead to death.Maintaining a more specific temperature within the pig-tolerance range also maximizes growth and improved feed to gain ratio.

To prevent disease spreading and encourage growth drug programs such as vitamins, antibiotics and other supplements are administered pre-emptively.At Rietvlei we undergo a monthly consultation by registered pig veterinarians and we also follow their health plan to insure the correct medication and dosages are used.

Sows are moved to farrowing crates a week before farrowing .This eases management of farrowing and reduce piglet losses due to overlaying. Houses are kept clean well ventilated and draught free.

Piglets are subjected to a range of treatments and are individually identified in an effort to ensure healthy lively youngsters.

Piglets are weaned at 24 days of age and removed from the sows and moved to weaned houses specially designed to maintain ideal temperature and ventilation. Floors are slatted for ease of manure handling and waste removal, feed is available 24/7 and each pig has ample moving area (0.5 square meters)

At 10 weeks of age pigs are moved to grower houses in a bigger area with space up to 1 square meter per pig were they continue on ad libitum feed. They are marketed at an age of 154 days and yield an average carcass of 75 kg's.

The other unit Katbosch is a grower facility only and weaners are brought into the piggery at approximately 10 kg's live mass and marketed at 115-120 kg's live mass. Both these units have been inspected by veterinary services and conform to export specifications as a veterinary compartment.

Rietvlei Boerdery, as part of utilizing capacity in the feed mill also manufactures a complete range of dog food retailing under the name "spectra" range of pet foods.

At Devon in the east of Gauteng we also farm with grass - 600 hectares of cultivated pastures are cut, baled and sold to the major feedlots and horse farmers as roughage.

In and around the piggeries and also near Endicott we work 600 hectares of land planting maize and soybeans in rotation and everything harvested goes to the piggery.
